The other day I was talking with a university professor. She asked me, "What's the number one thing I can do to prevent Diabetes?" Without even having to think about it, this is what I said... Stop drinking sugar!
Drinking sugar is one of worst things you can do to your body.
Why?
Drinking sugar makes it very hard for your body to keep your blood sugar stable. If you drink sugary drinks often, you end up getting Insulin Resistance.
That's bad news because...
Insulin Resistance makes it likely you'll get Type 2 Diabetes.
This ALL sounds terrible! And I know you don't want anything to do with it.
That's why I explain how all this works below so you'll see why you must stop drinking sugar...AND the sooner the better!
WARNING!
Stop Drinking Sugar!
Even drinking ONLY 2 sugary drinks/week
increases your risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes.
Your Body Can Only Handle So Much Glucose
Your body is designed to use glucose for fuel. You get glucose from carbohydrates.
(This much is TOTALLY normal and you DON'T need to be scared of carbohydrates if you eat the right kind – find out which carbs are ok here.)
But!
Your body can only handle so much glucose at one time. If you eat too much glucose, your body knows this is bad and an alarm signal goes off in your body.
The alarm signal is high blood sugar!
NOTE! If you only stick to eating fibery whole food carbohydrates, this problem will rarely happen, if ever!
But if you DRINK sugar, high blood sugar will likely happen.
High blood sugar is bad because it damages your blood vessels and other parts of your body.
The damage from high blood sugar is called inflammation. Inflammation causes heart disease and other serious problems.
So...you don’t want to have high blood sugar!

High Blood Sugar WILL Damage:
- Your Nerves (you could lose feeling in your hands/feet)
- Your Heart (you could have a heart attack)
- Your Blood Vessels (you could have a stoke)
- Your Internal Organs (you could get liver disease, kidney disease or some cancers)
- Your Eyes (you could go blind)
- Your Ears (you could go deaf)
- Your Digestive System (you could get bloating, abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting)
- Your Brain (you could get Alzheimer's or dementia)
Sounds like you need to do everything you can to avoid getting high blood sugar!
AND I'm sure you see you need to stop drinking sugar.
What Happens When You Drink Sugar
The sugar in liquids (soda, fruit juice, energy drinks, smoothies) gets into your bloodstream very quickly.
Why?
Because your stomach doesn't have to do much to digest liquid sugar! Your sugary drink is literally in your stomach for ONLY a few minutes...
AND after your stomach...into your bloodstream!
Within minutes the sugar from your Grande Caramel Frappuccino (16 tsp.) is zipping around your bloodstream!
This situation is very TERRIBLE and you quickly get high blood sugar. (not good)
How Your Body Tries to Fix High Blood Sugar
Your body knows high blood sugar is VERY bad… so…. your body tries to make the high blood sugar go away.
The quickest way to get rid of high blood sugar is to release insulin.
Within seconds of having high blood sugar, your body sends LOTS and LOTS and LOTS of insulin to try and fix the high blood sugar problem.
If your body has to fix these types of high blood sugar problems often, it can cause insulin resistance.
Insulin Resistance = your body doesn't use insulin very efficiently.
AND... Insulin Resistance leads to Type 2 Diabetes.

Some people feel changes in their body when they have high blood sugar:
- Feeling Sleepy
- Feeling Very Thirsty
- Having a Headache
- Not Being Able to Concentrate (foggy head)
- Peeing A Lot
- Feeling Weak
- Wounds Slow to Heal
- Blurry Vision
- Tingling and Numbness in The Hands Or Feet
Many people DO NOT feel anything when they have high blood sugar. This is why Type 2 Diabetes is called the silent killer.
If you stop drinking sugar, you will have less high blood sugar. You'll also be less likely to get Type 2 Diabetes.
How Much Sugar Are You Drinking?
It’s quite alarming to find out how much sugar is in stuff you can drink.
Most ladies are HORRIFIED at the amounts of sugar in popular drinks. Coffee drinks, iced tea, energy drinks, soda…they're ALL packed with sugar.
And don't be fooled into drinking fruit juice! It's no better! Fruit is very high in NATURAL sugars, which makes it a sugary drink -- just like soda!
(Find out why it IS okay to EAT fruit though.)
Look at how much sugar is in these drinks!
| | |
---|
| | 17 tsp of sugar. Over 1/3 of a cup of sugar! |
Caramel Frappuccino Blended Coffee | | 16.5 tsp sugar. Over 1/3 of a cup of sugar! |
| | |
| | |
| | |

| | |
Smoothie King: Apple Kiwi Kale | | 24.75 tsp of sugar. Over 1/2 cup of sugar! |
| | |
Apple Juice (Unsweetened) | | |
Orange Juice (Unsweetened) | | |
Like I said, all this sugar zipping around your bloodstream causes inflammation, AND inflammation leads to chronic conditions like Diabetes and Heart Disease.
So, if you don’t want to get Diabetes, you must stop drinking sugar.
Many decades ago I used to drink Starbucks Caffé Mochas…I was in love!
That is until I looked at the ingredients! 13 tsp of sugar!
(I never drank one again).
What’s OK To Drink?
