What Is Insulin Resistance

What Is Insulin Resistance? Q and A

What Is Insulin Resistance? Does it mean you have Type 2 Diabetes? Not necessarily…Read on to find out exactly what IR is and all of the things you can do to overcome it…(easy Q and A format)

Q#1: What Is Insulin Resistance?

When the body becomes less sensitive to insulin.

Your muscles, liver, and cells need insulin to shuttle glucose out of your bloodstream. With Insulin Resistance this ‘shuttling’ is impaired and doesn’t work very well.

Insulin Resistance happens when insulin levels are high over a prolonged period of time causing the body to become less sensitive to it.

It’s sort of like living next to an airport…pretty soon you don’t even notice the jets flying overhead. This is what happens with the body…your body doesn’t react properly to insulin so more sugar is left in your blood…which is very bad.

Q#2: What Causes Insulin Resistance?

  • Weight Gain. (Almost all people that are overweight are insulin resistant)
  • Disrupted Gut Microbiome (from digestive issues and overuse of antibiotics and some meds)
  • Chronic Inflammation
  • Genetic Factors
  • Disrupted Sleep Patterns  (like shift work)

Insulin Resistance Becomes Diabetes

Q#3: How Would I Know If I Had Insulin Resistance?

  • Weight Gain Around the Tummy
  • Chronic Tiredness
  • Constant Hunger
  • Brain Fog
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Blood Fat Issues
  • Excess Hair on the Face, Neck, Chest and Back
  • Or you have no noticeable symptoms at all

Be a smart woman!! Don’t self-diagnose! Go to a doctor and ask to be tested!

Q#4: Is There A Test For Insulin Resistance?

There is no one test.

Sometimes a Fasting Insulin Test is used.

Sometimes a doctor will conclude you have Insulin Resistance from other tests like:

  • Fasting Blood Glucose Tests [test for Glucose Intolerance]
  • Oral Glucose Tolerance Test [this is a test for Prediabetes/Type 2 Diabetes]
  • A1C Test (Hemoglobin A1c Test, also called Glycated Hemoglobin) [this is a test for Prediabetes/Type 2 Diabetes]
  • Blood Fat Tests
  • Homeostatic Model Assessment (also called HOMA – IR Test)

Not sure what your blood sugar levels are doing? Get a blood glucose monitor and test it!

Your blood sugar testing goals are:

  • less than 100 when you wake up (Fasting Blood Sugar)
  • 140, or less, 2 hours after meals (Postprandial Glucose Level)

Q#5: Is Insulin Resistance Associated With Certain Diseases?

Yes.

  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • Heart Disease
  • Obesity
  • High Blood Pressure
  • PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome)
  • NAFLD (Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease)
  • Metabolic Syndrome

Q#6: Is Insulin Resistance & Prediabetes The Same Thing?

No. But it does mean your body is not reacting normally to the sugar in your blood (which is not good).

You can have normal blood sugar numbers and still be Insulin Resistant.

BUT…
Insulin resistance usually turns into Prediabetes and Type 2 Diabetes if not kept in check. Usually the start of blood sugar problems is Insulin Resistance.
