You need to know…if you have a family-history of diabetes you have an increased risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes. But… many people without a family history will also develop Type 2 Diabetes.

Who Is At Risk For Type 2 Diabetes? (other than the overweight)

Those with:

  • Chronic infection (staph)
  • Some endocrine (hormonal) disorders
  • Family member with Diabetes (or even just Prediabetes)
  • Certain medications (steroids & statins increase your risk)
  • Disrupted gut microbiome (gut bacteria)
  • Age – 45 years old or older
  • Family ethnicity – African American, American Indian, Asian American, Pacific Islander or Hispanic American/Latino, Aboriginal (basically non-European ethnicity)
  • You had gestational diabetes, or your mother had it with you
  • You have high blood pressure
  • You gave birth to at least one baby weighing more than 9 lbs.
  • You have high cholesterol
  • You don’t get enough physical activity (lots of sitting, not much walking)
  • Poor sleep habits (not enough sleep, inconsistent sleep patterns, shift work)
  • Eating an unhealthy diet (processed foods, lots of meat, high fat diet, refined grains, few fruits and vegetables)
